Vanuatu Earthquake Recovery

Mangalilu Water Access

Fundraising Update:

Together, we raised over $14,000 to support local projects required for recovery from the devastating earthquake that struck Port Vila and surrounding areas on December 17, 2024. A huge thank you to all of our supporters who donated to this project.

Clean water access restored for 500+ people

Our first project from the earthquake recovery funds is the Magalilu Water Access project, located just outside of Port Villa.

This community-led initiative involves the repair and upgrade of the village water system, providing fresh drinking water for over 500 people.

The village’s current water systems were damaged by the earthquake and further impacted by every aftershock.

This solution will not only restore access to clean water but also strengthen the system against future earthquake damage - a sustainable outcome for the community!

The Co-Ground team continues to work with local communities to determine the next use of the earthquake recovery funds for similarly impactful and sustainable outcomes.

The impact of the earthquake continues to have devastating impacts on the livelihoods and economy of Port Vila in particular - this recent report from the ABC documented the current challenges and what lies ahead for disaster-prone Vanuatu.
